Giuseppe is NotCo's proprietary AI system that powers its product development. The Biagio module is one of the key applications within the Giuseppe Platform. It focuses primarily on formulation, enabling users to:
- Create and manage formulation projects.
- Interact with AI capabilities for product development.
- Work with ingredients and process considerations through an advanced chat interface.
I joined NotCo as the Product Designer in charge of redesigning Biagio with one main objective:
"Have users stop documenting in third-party software and document all formulations in Biagio."
To tackle this challenge, I began with a deep dive into understanding user needs. I conducted extensive user research and analyzed feedback previously gathered by the team. Over time, I worked closely with Product Developers, Food Scientists, and Chefs to understand their workflows and pain points.
During the project, we launched multiple features incrementally. Once we had delivered a significant number of updates, we organized a "Usability Night". This event created a relaxed and collaborative environment where users could test Biagio while sharing a meal with the team.
The insights gathered during the Usability Night, combined with in-platform feedback, allowed us to refine our roadmap and prioritize features that delivered the most value. I created designs and validated them through iterative prototypes, ensuring both usability and efficiency.
NotCo, provided a unique environment where the benefits of working on in-house software quickly became clear. Communication with users was as easy as scheduling a single meeting.
From my research and analysis, I identified four main issues we needed to address:
1. Biagio was being used as a documentation tool rather than as a means to accelerate or improve product development.
2. Documented formulas lacked relevant, easily accessible information, and comparing multiple formulas was cumbersome.
3. Formulas did not display nutritional, physicochemical, or other relevant data broken down per ingredient.
4. Biagio was not adaptable to the different needs of various user roles.
During my time working on Biagio (March 2023 - September 2024), we launched multiple key features, including:
- Redesigned formula documentation process
- Ingredient management via the new Ingredient Pantry
- Nutritional Labeling feature
- Nutritional Targets feature
- Giuseppe Advanced Chat
- Formula Cost feature
- Support for validating extracted TDS data
- HFSS Score Calculator
A critical part of the redesign was driving product feature adoption.
Measurable Outcomes
- Improved task completion time by ~25%
- Increased user satisfaction by ~20%
By designing a scalable and efficient system, we were able to quickly deliver key features, ensuring measurable improvements and a more streamlined experience for users.
